New life for Schoenhofen building
For more than a century, the Schoenhofen Brewery Administration Building has occupied the corner of Canalport and 18th Street. Built as a monument to the son of the brewery's owner in 1886, the building was closed during Prohibition. After a short stint as headquarters for another brewery, and then an adhesive company, the building and fourteen others on its seven-acre parcel sat derelict and open to the elements. (more)
Eye Exam: Pilsen Murals in Peril
The first things that hit the eye on a sunny day in Pilsen are the murals. There is art everywhere—on storefronts, brickwork, churches, restaurants. The Virgin Mary of Guadalupe glows blue and gold on the side of a four-story building; an unfinished Aztec god gazes down on people behind a tortilleria; in an older mural, a portrait of Che Guevara stares accusingly at passers-by, reminding the majority Mexican-American neighborhood of their collective ancestors and traditions. Hyde Park Mural Getting New Life
Caryl Yasko, 67, is doing something new for something old under a Hyde Park viaduct: restoring the mural that jumpstarted her career as an artist in the early 1970s. The mural, 'Under City Stone,' near 55th Street and Lake Park Avenue, depicts a poem called 'Rapid Transit,' written by renowned author James Agee. (more)
General Election: In Hyde Park, the stream of voters is steady
Early long lines at William H. Ray Elementary School (for precincts 8, 27, 30 and 52) had faded by 10:30 a.m. Poll watchers Roger Huff and Arnold Johnson say early line management problems and booth shortages had been mitigated and the turnaround time for most voters was about 15 minutes. The site is vote-central for about 900 University of Chicago students (precinct 27) whose dormitory is in the precinct, as well as about 800 other people who live in the Hyde Park neighborhood. General Election: Kids like the hometown favorite in mock vote on Election Day
At William H. Ray Elementary School in Hyde Park, the line to vote downstairs was shorter than the one upstairs -- with good reason. The school is a polling place for four precincts in the area, including the 900 registered voters of the 27th Precinct, and the grown-ups were voting downstairs while the pupils, aged 9 and 10, voted upstairs. The line downstairs was shorter because there were more polling stations. (more) (photos)
Pilsen celebrates "Day of the Dead," honors young victims
Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is traditionally celebrated tomorrow with public displays, prayer and remembrance for Mexicans worldwide. But at St. Procopius, a Catholic parish and school in Pilsen, Day of the Dead celebrations were held yesterday, to let students remember and honor those who they've recently lost. On Sept. 15, two students from St. Procopius were killed by their father, Chicago police officer Dannie Marchan, who then committed suicide. The siblings, Anthony, 9, and Alizay, 7, yesterday were memorialized by photographs on top of an altar just inside the entrance to the school. (more) (photos)
